Registered Nurse II (Pediatric Intensive Care Unit) 3 positions at Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral & Research Hospital (KUTRRH)

Job Purpose

To provide specialized critical care nursing for pediatric patients in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) through continuous monitoring, administering treatments, and responding to emergencies, while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to ensure safe, evidence-based care and optimal recovery outcomes.

Duties and responsibilities

Reporting to the Nurse In-Charge, Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), the position holder will be responsible for the following:

1. Providing specialized nursing care to critically ill pediatric patients in PICU, ensuring continuous monitoring and timely interventions.

2. Assessing and recording vital signs, hemodynamic parameters, and neurological status to detect changes in patient condition.

3. Administering prescribed medications, fluids, and nutrition accurately, including intravenous and enteral therapies.

4. Operating and monitoring advanced life-support equipment such as ventilators, infusion pumps, and cardiac monitors to maintain optimal patient care.

5. Collaborating with pediatric intensivists and multidisciplinary teams to implement individualized care plans.

6. Responding promptly to pediatric emergencies and participating in resuscitation and stabilization procedures.

7. Maintaining strict infection prevention and control measures within the PICU environment.

8. Documenting all nursing interventions, observations, and changes in patient status accurately in the Hospital Management Information System (HMIS).

9. Educating and supporting families on PICU care processes and discharge planning to promote continuity of care.

10. Any other duty as may be assigned.

Key Qualifications and Experience Requirements

1. Diploma in Kenya Registered Community Health Nursing (KRCHN)/Kenya Registered Nursing (KRN) from a recognized institution.

2. Higher Diploma in Paediatric Intensive Care Nursing, or its equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.

3. Training certificate in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) will be an added advantage.

4. Registration by the Nursing Council of Kenya.

5. Valid practicing license as a Paediatric Intensive Care Nurse from the Nursing Council of Kenya.

6. Proficiency in computer applications.

7. Compliance with Chapter Six (6) of the Constitution.
