Description

Our Client with operations in rural Kenya is seeking to engage an Animal Health Program Officer.

Major Responsibilities

Develop and manage the organization’s improved animal breeds strategy by delivering on set outputs and

outcomes.

Establish dairy, beef and shoats rearing projects in cooperatives working with the organization in a scalable and

sustainable way.

Work in close collaboration with other staff in the organization to promote the overall growth of the smallholder

farming practices in the cooperatives.

Collaborate closely with the relevant County department staff in the implementation of the organization’s work.

Timely execution of the set plans and delivery on all targeted activities as directed by your supervisor.

Develop and track project budget requirements in line with organization’s policies and procedures.

Conduct research on best practices in the industry and advise on the most efficient and effective implementation

strategies.

Support in the development and periodic review of the program training curriculum

Ensure implementation and follow-up of farmers to accelerate their adoption of best animal husbandry practices

by maintaining 90% presence in the field

Monitor the implementation, progress and periodically report all program activities to the supervisor based on the

agreed upon reporting format

Develop a disease prevention and management plan for the farmers

Implement and also participate in vaccination and deworming regimes and ensure farmers adhere to disease

control plans as required

Conduct routine disease surveillance among the organization’s farmers and advice on mitigation measures ; ensure

farmers conduct their animal management practices at optimum efficiencies

Develop and maintain effective relationships with Cooperative members, Community leaders, veterinary and

livestock departments of the County government

Develop climate-smart livestock strategies, including emergency fodder conservation, drought mitigation, and

pasture management for ASAL pastoralists.

Any other duties as shall be assigned to you by your supervisor.

Qualifications, Skills and Attributes

  •  

Degree in Animal Health or a related field

  •  

Must have active registration and a valid practicing license with the Kenya Veterinary Board (KVB).

  •  

Minimum of 2 years relevant experience

  •  

Excellent communication, interpersonal and writing skills

  •  

Drive, competence, flexibility and a willingness to learn

  •  

Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to multitask

  •  

The ability to cope with pressure

  •  

Good teamwork, analytical and problem-solving skills

  •  

Proficiency in English and Swahili languages

  •  

Willingness to be based in the rural remote communities where the organization operates

  •  

Strong attention to detail

  •  

Passion for the organizations vision and mission

  •  

Ability to ride a motorbike; owning a motorbike shall be an added advantage
