Applications are invited for the following position:
LABORATORY TECHNOLOGIST - CENTER FOR EPIDEMIOLOGICAL MODELLING AND ANALYSIS – AD/10/42/2025, 3 POSTS
The Project CEMA, a Center of Excellence at the University of Nairobi established in 2020, unites experts from multiple disciplines to use data-driven approaches in tackling infectious diseases and improving public health in Africa. It has guided responses to COVID-19 and other outbreaks, advanced disease control efforts, and strengthened capacity in health data analysis with support from major global funders such as the Gates Foundation, CEPI, and the Wellcome Trust. This is a 24-month, multi-site study on infectious diseases, funded by the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI).

The Position
The Laboratory Technologists will report to the Project Coordinator, Accelerating
CHIKungunya burden Estimation to inform Vaccine Evaluation (ACHIEVE), be based at Isiolo County Referral Hospital and Merti Sub-County Hospital, and occasionally travel between the two sites.

Duties and Responsibilities:
a) Participate in study-related sample collection, including venipuncture (phlebotomy), and ensure handling, processing, and storage in strict accordance with the study protocol and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
b) Receive, label, register, process, and safely store study biological specimens.
c) Maintain and calibrate laboratory equipment; perform routine quality control checks; and troubleshoot technical malfunctions promptly.
d) Ensure full compliance with Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) standards, biosafety
protocols, and biosecurity procedures at all times.
e) Accurately document test results, maintain laboratory records and logs, and ensure
timely data entry into the study-approved REDCap electronic data capture database.
f) Actively participate in both external quality assessments (EQA) and internal quality
audits to maintain the accuracy and reliability of laboratory procedures.
g) Assist in the training and mentorship of other laboratory staff.
h) Support the study sites to ensure a safe and efficient environment.
i) Support the safe packaging and shipping of samples to reference laboratories in
compliance with International Air Transport Association (IATA) regulations for the
transport of infectious substances.

Job Specification
Applicants must have:
a) Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology or other relevant field from a recognised
institution.
b) Certificate in Computer Applications from a recognised institution.
c) Registration and a valid practising license with the Kenya Medical Laboratory
Technicians and Technologists Board (KMLTTB).
d) Minimum three (3) years’ experience at Laboratory Technologist II level or
equivalent, with demonstrated competence in diagnostic virology, serology, or
molecular biology techniques.
e) Demonstrated ability to work in field-based and BSL-2 laboratory environments.
f) Experience working in donor-funded infectious disease research projects will be an
added advantage.
g) Ability to use REDCap for data entry and management will be an added advantage.
h) Knowledge of the local language(s) spoken in Isiolo County will be an added
advantage.

Terms of Appointment
The appointment will be for one (1) year contract, renewable subject to performance and availability of funds.
