Registered Nurse II (Pediatric Oncology Nursing) at Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral & Research Hospital (KUTRRH)

Job Purpose

To provide specialized nursing care to pediatric oncology patients by administering prescribed therapies, monitoring treatment response, managing symptoms, and offering holistic support to patients and families, ensuring safe, evidence-based care and promoting quality of life throughout the treatment journey.

Duties and responsibilities

Reporting to the Nurse In-Charge, Paediatric Oncology Unit, the position holder will be responsible for the following:

1. Providing specialized nursing care to pediatric oncology patients in accordance with hospital standards and oncology protocols.

2. Administering prescribed therapies and medications safely, while monitoring for adverse reactions and treatment-related side effects.

3. Assessing and documenting patient conditions, progress, and response to treatment accurately in the Hospital Management Information System (HMIS).

4. Preparing patients for oncology procedures and providing post-treatment care to ensure recovery and comfort.

5. Educating patients and families on treatment plans, symptom management, and home care practices to promote adherence and well-being.

6. Collaborating with oncologists and multidisciplinary teams to develop and implement individualized care plans.

7. Providing emotional and psychosocial support to patients and families throughout the treatment journey.

8. Maintaining strict infection prevention and control measures to protect immune-compromised patients.

9. Participating in oncology research, continuous professional development, and quality improvement initiatives.

10. Any other duty as may be assigned.

Key Qualifications and Experience Requirements

1. Diploma in Kenya Registered Community Health Nursing (KRCHN)/Kenya Registered Nursing (KRN) from a recognized institution.

2. Higher Diploma in Paediatric Oncology Nursing, or its equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.

3. Certificate in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) will be an added advantage.

4. Registration by the Nursing Council of Kenya.

5. Valid practicing license as a Paediatric Oncology Nurse from the Nursing Council of Kenya.

6. Proficiency in computer applications.

7. Compliance with Chapter Six (6) of the Constitution.
