Medical Specialist (Radiation Oncology) at Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral & Research Hospital (KUTRRH)

Job Purpose

To provide comprehensive cancer care by specializing in the use of radiation therapy for tumor treatment and symptom management, ensuring accurate planning, precise delivery, and thorough patient follow-up and support.

Duties and responsibilities

Reporting to the Head of Oncology, the position holder will be responsible for the following:

      i.        Interpreting diagnostic imaging and pathology reports to facilitate accurate treatment planning.

    ii.        Developing individualized radiation treatment plans in collaboration with medical physicists and radiation therapy technologists.

   iii.        Prescribing and overseeing the administration of external beam radiation, brachytherapy, and other radiation modalities.

   iv.        Monitoring patients during and after radiation therapy to assess treatment response and manage side effects or complications.

    v.        Collaborating with multidisciplinary oncology teams to coordinate comprehensive cancer care.

   vi.        Communicating treatment plans, expected outcomes, and post-treatment care to patients and families.

  vii.        Participating in tumor boards and multidisciplinary case discussions.

 viii.        Engaging in clinical research, quality improvement initiatives, and continuous medical education in radiation oncology.

   ix.        Mentoring junior doctors, interns, and medical students in oncology practice.

            i.      Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from an institution recognized by the Kenya Medical Practitioners’ and Dentists’ Council.

          ii.      Master's degree in Medicine in Radiation Oncology or equivalent from an institution recognized by the Kenya Medical Practitioners’ and Dentists’ Council.

         iii.      Registration with the Kenya Medical Practitioners’ and Dentists’ Council.

         iv.      Retention in the Kenya Medical Practitioners’ and Dentists’ Council register.

          v.      Recognition as a Specialist by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council.

         vi.      Valid Practice License as a specialist from the Kenya Medical Practitioners’ and Dentists’ Council.

        vii.      Professional Insurance Indemnity Cover.

       viii.      Proficiency in computer applications.

         ix.      Compliance with Chapter Six (6) of the Constitution of Kenya.

      i.        Strong analytical and decision making skills.

    ii.        Ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.

   iii.        Effective communication and interpersonal skills with patients and colleagues.

   iv.        Empathy, compassion, and supportive communication with patients.

    v.        Ethical practice and high professional integrity.
