Emergency Medical Technician III at Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral & Research Hospital (KUTRRH)

Job Purpose

To respond to emergencies, provide pre-hospital care, coordinate ambulance services, and ensure safe patient transport while monitoring outcomes.

Duties and responsibilities

Reporting to Head of Accident & Emergency, the position holder will be responsible for the following:

1. Coordinating emergency calls efficiently and making critical decisions to ensure timely lifesaving interventions.

2. Providing basic life support and collecting vital patient data.

3. Assessing patients and determining their emergency medical care requirements.

4. Delivering emergency care using appropriate techniques and medical equipment.

5. Maintaining effective two-way communication through radio and telephone, with strong verbal command.

6. Allocating ambulance personnel and vehicles appropriately to respond to emergency calls and scheduled events.

7. Planning the strategic placement of ambulances for optimal response times.

8. Transporting patients according to established protocols and procedures.

9. Planning and implementing patient care interventions during transport.

10. Administering authorized medication to improve patient outcomes.

11. Monitoring healthcare outcomes during transit and preparing individualized reports.

12. Documenting patient care activities while in transit.

13. Ensuring accurate data entry for patient tracking and data analysis.

14. Responding to distress calls with pre-hospital instructions and emotional reassurance to callers.

15. Collecting vital caller information and relaying it to ambulance crews for adequate preparation.

16. Any other duty as may be assigned.

Key Qualifications and Experience Requirements

1. Certificate in Emergency Medical Technician course or equivalent qualification from a recognized training institution.

2. Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate.

3. Valid First Aid certificate from a recognized training institution.

4. Certification by the Kenya Council of Emergency Medical Technicians.

5. Valid Emergency Medical Technician license from the Kenya Council of Emergency Medical Technicians.

6. Proficiency in computer applications

7. Compliance with Chapter Six (6) of the Constitution of Kenya.
